Abraham the Mighty Intercessor

( The Father of all who Believe)

11-13-24

Hebrews 11:8,17        James 2:21,23

Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Jas 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

  • I wanted to look at the life of Abraham for our first example of prayer.

  • A year are so ago we looked briefly at Abraham life of prayer

  • Without us going into his life to deeply ,we want to take a brief look just at his prayer life.

                                    By: Andrew Murray.

Abraham is a fascinating individual in the O.T.

Abraham laid the framework of how to live a life surrendered to God.

  • Abraham was truly a man of persistence   (His prayers were never superficial)

  • Abraham was always pushing and pressing God to the next level.

  • Sometimes he got his way         sometimes he did not !

                              KNOWN FACTS ABOUT ABRAHAM

  1. Abraham’s Prayers were specific and intentional.

  2. Abraham prayed for those he did not agree with.  Genesis 20:17,18

  • Abimelech is prayed for, even though he did not agree with Abimelech

  • Ge 20:17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.

18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

  • God revealed truth to Abimelech, God told him to go to Abraham

  • Abraham prayed  that Abimelech & wife would be healed

  • Abraham prayed for their health and family

We all have people who have hurt us & disagreed with us or dislikes us !

  • Abraham prayed to God to show mercy on them.

Our Example- Luke 23:34

Lu 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

  1. Abraham prayed for the whole Nation.           ( 2 Chronicles  7:14 )

{ the news outlets did not say one thing about the prayers of God’s people}

  • We will not discuss Sodom  this week.

  • We must pray for our leaders of our country !

  1. Prayer begins with knowing God !

  1. Knowing God through the scriptures is only the beginning !

  2. Knowing God through prayer.-   (develop a relationship with Him)

  1. Prayer begins with knowing the person of God

-prayer is more than a prayer list

-practice His presence daily (friend to a friend)(1)

II.         Prayer proceeds according to the purposes of God      Genesis 18:19

For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after

                     him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment;

that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

  1.  God revealed His plan to Abraham   (cry of them- the oppressed & brutalized)

Romans 8:28- And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

  1. God had prompted Abraham to engage in this Spirit of Prayer!

(Prayer begins with a relationship with God and proceeds according to His purposes.)

III.       Prayer remains persistent with God           Col.4:2

                 Col 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Lu 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray,

and not to faint;   (unjust Judge)

                1Th 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

  1. Abraham appealed to God by God’s Nature

“The longer you stay in the presence of God, you get a proper perspective on the

world and all that’s in it!”

  1.  Abraham appeals to God on His just Justise.   (God is Righteous )

IV.     Prayer trust in the Will of God

1Jo 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing

according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the

petitions that we desired of him.

1Jo 3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. (boldness)

1Jo 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

(  Abraham is called the Father of the Faithful)

Ga 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

                                                                                                                                                          (2)

For I know Him

Genesis 18:19-33

Ge 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

 20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:

28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.

29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.

30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.

31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.

32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

( THE PRIVILEGES OF THE GODLY MAN)

  • God is getting ready to bring wrath down on Sodom & Gomorrah

  • Before He does this He speaks to Abraham about His Plans

  • We see a snap shot of their relationship  made possible for a Godly Man’s living.

Ps 4:3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.

Ps 32:6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

2Pe 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

  • What are the privileges of a Godly Man ?

  •

  1. THE PRIVILEGE OF AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FATHER.

Ge 18:17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

A. Involves Divine Discernment - (v. 19 - “I know him...”) God knows us

B. Involves Divine Dialogue - (v. 17-18; 20-33)

C. Involves Divine Decrees - (v. 18)

Ps 139:17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!

II. THE PRIVILEGE OF AN INVOLVEMENT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY

A. We Are Involved Through Our Counsel - (v. 19) The word “command” (“issuing orders”.)

(We have a great privilege to share with others His words)   (passing along truth)

B. We Are Involved Through Our Character - (v. 19) The little phrase “after Him”, has the idea of

C. We Are Involved Through Our Continuation - (v. 19) “and they shall keep the way of the Lord”.

III. THE PRIVILEGE OF AN INVESTMENT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FUTURE

  • Abraham doesn’t know it yet, He made investment to generations to come

A. Guaranteed By God’s Promises - “that which He hath spoken of him

B. Guaranteed By God’s Presence - “LORD” - God refers to Himself by the name of LORD.

                                                                  (Self Existent One)

C. Guaranteed By God’s Power - “may bring upon Abraham” -

                                                      The Intercessions of Abraham

Genesis 18:20-23

Ge 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

  • The Lord does not hide from Abraham what is getting ready to happen.

  • So the Angels of God warn Abraham what is getting ready to take place

  • Here we see Abraham interceding with God for Sodom & Lot his nephew.

  • Abraham reasons with God if there are 10 righteous, He would not destroy Sodom.

  • Lot is saved but looses children & a wife

  • I thought how interceding prayer grow ?

What a mystery of glory there is in prayer! On the one hand we see God in His holiness, love. And power waiting and longing to bless man. On the other hand there is sinful man, a worm of the dust, bringing down from God by prayer the very life and love of heaven to dwell in his heart.

But the glory of intercession is so much greater: when a man is bold and asks from God what he desires for others. He seeks to bring down on one soul, or it may be on hundreds and thousands, the power of the eternal life with all its blessings.

Intercession’s !  Would one not say that this is very holiest exercise of our boldness as God’s children? It is the highest privilege and enjoyment connected to our communion with God. It is power of being used by God as instruments for His great work of making men His habitation and showing forth His glory.

Would one not think that the church would count intercession as one of the chief means of grace? The church would seek above everything to cultivate in God’s children the power of an unceasing prayerfulness on behalf of the perishing world.

   One would expect believers, who have to some extent been brought into the secret, to feel what strength there is in unity and what assurance there is that God will certainly avenge His own elect who cry day and night to Him  It is when Christians cease for looking for help in external union and aim at all being bound together to the throne of God by an  unceasing devotion to Jesus Christ, and an unceasing continuance in supplication for the power of God’s Spirit, that the church will put on her beautiful garments and put on her strength, too, and overcome the world.                    { Andrew Murray}

                                                              PRAY ONE FOR ANOTHER

                                                                           James 5:16                                                            ( 1)

1 .Grow in friendship with God – When we allow God into our lives and develop relationship with Him, we grow in our understanding of what He is actually like. This helps us know His heart so we can pray in alignment with His will. Prayer originates in the heart of God.

2. Growing in your knowledge the Word of God – We can read the Bible to see what the will of God is for people and the situations we may be in. The Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), so when we pray in agreement with it things can change. Pray a specific Psalm over a person or a nation, inserting actual names where possible.

3. Grow in Your ability to be still and listen – One aspect of prayer is discerning what God wants to do and then asking Him to do it. As we learn to still our hearts before Him and open our ears to what He is saying, we can pray for the things He wants to do. It is totally normal to have moments of silence when we pray. Before sitting in silence, pray, asking God to show you a picture or give you a scripture to reveal the desire of His heart.

4. Take your eyes off yourself and fix them on Jesus – It doesn’t matter what we sound like or how we come across to others when we pray. What matters is that we are engaging the Spirit of God. Perhaps praying aloud in a group setting is very stretching for you. A way to focus on Jesus rather than yourself would be to take the risk and agree with others aloud in prayer (Matthew 18:19-20)

Mt 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Mt 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

5. Worship – A great way to enter in to intercession is to begin with a time of worship. When we worship Him and let go of our own ideas and agendas, we open up ourselves to connecting with what is on His heart and partnering with Him in what he wants to do. If you typically worship by listening to music, try reading a Psalm aloud; Psalm 27, 33 or 46 would be a great place to start. As you declare each verse of the Psalm, picture what it describes and see God as the Bible declares Him to be.

Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Mt 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

  • Ps 65:2 O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.

  • 1Jo 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

  •  15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Jesus clearly  taught us to guarantee answers to our prayers

                                                   Here’s what Jesus said.

1. Find someone to agree with you in prayer.Customize this sermon

Matthew 18:19  "Again I tell you, if two of you on earth agree (harmonize together,) about whatever [anything] they shall ask, it will be done for them by My Father which is in heaven."

  • Naturally anything in His will for us.

Prayer partners are those who can agree and share the burden for the things for which you are praying.

The Greek word "agree", is "sumphoneo", the word from which is derived the English, "symphony."

-One of the powerful aspects of a symphony orchestra is the way such a large number of instrumentalists work together to bring out the composer’s work.

Jesus is teaching us to likewise work together and harmonize with other Christ followers in our prayer lives. This gives our prayers great power. Together we achieve the work of our heavenly composer.

Christ also taught us to enter our prayer closets and pray alone. (Matthew 6:6) But there are times when we should seek out others who agree with our prayer requests and pray with them.

There is a humbling aspect to asking others to pray with you. There is also a unifying aspect. God wants you to be a part of the family. This is one of the ways we practice the community God intended for us to enjoy.

Praying with others fine tunes our prayers just like rehearsing together perfects the work of the symphony.    (more together the greater power)                                                                                                                                                       2. Pray in the future tense.

Mark 11:24  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Ps 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

  • Never boast what you are going to do or have !

  • We are counting on God doing what is needed not what we can do !

Prayer is counting on what God can do, and it is believing !    1 John 5:14,15

3. Manage your motives in prayer.

John 14:13-14  And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

                                                                        1

  • Remember in whose name you are praying in !

God’s name is very powerful to be sure, but what Christ had in mind here was the motivation of our prayers.

When David approached the Philistine champion Goliath he said,  Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. (1 Samuel 17:45)

  • David was God’s ambassador, going in God’s name. He didn’t step on to the battlefield because he was looking for a name for himself.

When you pray, are your motives right?

James 4:3  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon

                    your lusts.

4. Hold your ground in prayer.

John 15:7  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Matthew 7:7 ,8   Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

  • The Bible says we are to keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking !

  • It will be given you.

  • Mt 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

7. Asking for a Prayer Partner- 1 Thess. 5:25- Brethren, pray for us.

                                                      together with me in your prayers to God for me;

8. Agree on the major-  (you agree with another on the purpose for which you pray)

Agree on the destination, but not the road to get there

Agree on the victory, but not how the battle is fought.

Agree on glorifying God, but you can do it differently

                                                                    WHERE  REVIVAL  BEGINS

2 Chronicles 7:14

2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

  • O that we had the insight to see our selves as God sees us.

  • That is where Spiritual progress is being made

  • We all want to think the best of ourselves

  • We must remember that God sees everything, (nothing escapes His eye)

  • Revival is God’s wake up call.

  • When God sends Revival, the church wakes up from a sleep of slumber.

  • Revival is when God calls His backslidden people to repentance, faith & obedience to Him.

  • This text is the most well known Revival text in Scripture .

II. The Conditions for Revival

“Will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wi

Here are the four conditions for revival:

#1: Humility

What exactly is humility? Although many answers might be given, perhaps the simplest is that humility means seeing my true condition before God. After all, pride is simply taking credit for things that I’m not really responsible for. When we start feeling too puffed up about ourselves, we need to remember 1 Corinthians 4:7, “What do you have that you did not receive?” The answer is nothing. Not even Bill Gates can say, “I did this by myself.” To be sure, it took courage and ingenuity and commitment and perseverance to build Microsoft. Mr. Gates sits atop a multi-billion-dollar empire that didn’t happen by chance. Give that man all the credit he deserves. The same applies to every other successful man or woman in any field of endeavor. Kudos to anyone who has “made it” to the top. But just remember this. The strength to do the task, the intelligence to put together the plan, the skill to bring all the parts together, the courage to make it happen—all of it comes directly from God. It is true that between the richest man and the poorest man there is a great gulf in terms of worldly possessions. But on one point—the only one that counts—there is no difference. Both are alike the recipients of the grace of God. Neither man has anything to boast about. When we understand that, it changes the way we look at life, it changes the way we evaluate ourselves, and it changes the way we treat other people. If we are wise, it also changes our view of worldly success. We won’t base our self-image on our net worth when we believe God isn’t impressed with our bank account. We’ll have time for people because we understand we are all created by the same God.

#2: Prayer

What sort of prayer is the Lord talking about? It is the sincere prayer of a person who realizes his true condition. When I understand everything I have comes as a gift from God, my prayers will be filled with gratitude, love and praise. I will cry out to God, confessing how far short I fall of his divine standards. And every day I will remember the words of Jesus, “Without me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

# 3: Seeking God’s Face

The phrase “seek my face” is a familiar one in the Old Testament. It has to do with the direction of my life. It is very similar to the fourth beatitude: “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). To seek God’s face is to hunger for a closer walk with him. Many of us know little of this because we fill our stomachs with spiritual junk food that never satisfies but keeps us from seeking nutritious food. The question is, what are you hungry for right now? Those who are hungry to know God seek one thing; those who are hungry for a career seek something else. What you are hungry for determines what you seek.

# 4: Turning from our Wicked Ways

At some point things have to change. We must repent. To repent means you turn from your wicked ways. You used to cheat on your wife, but now you don’t. You used to be lazy, but now you aren’t. You used to fill your mind with bitterness, but now you don’t. Once you were angry most of the day, but now you have turned away from anger. Once you were sloppy on the job when the boss wasn’t watching, but not anymore. Once you lived in lust for that which God has forbidden you to have, but not anymore. Once you lived to party on the weekends, but that life is part of your past. Whatever your wicked ways are, revival means turning from those ways to the ways that Please God. It means a definite break with the past and a deliberate change of direction.

If you think about it, these four conditions form a kind of progression:

You will never pray with any fervency until you see your true condition before God.

You will never seek God’s face until you begin to get serious about prayer.

You will never turn from your wicked ways until God becomes all-important in your life.

Humility leads to prayer. Prayer leads to seeking God’s face. Seeking God’s face leads to turning from our wicked ways.

III. The Results of Revival

“Then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (v. 14c).

We need to think carefully about this because it’s easy to turn 2 Chronicles 7:14 into a formula for revival. Certainly the verse lays out a plan for us to follow. The word “then” encourages us to believe our crying to God will never be in vain.

Our tears are not in vain.

Our prayers are not in vain.

Our burden is not in vain.

Our sadness is not in vain.

Our desperation is not in vain.

Our prayers are not in vain

Perhaps we can say it this way. When we are so dissatisfied with the status quo that we cry out to God for help, the answer will indeed come from heaven and things will begin to change. We must not limit God as to the how and the when. He is still the sovereign God who does whatever pleases him (Psalm 115:3). We must not dictate to the Lord about how the answer from heaven will come. He will answer in his own time, in his own way, according to his own will. But we have this assurance:

He will hear.

He will forgive.

He will heal.

If we do our part, though it will seem very incomplete, God will certainly do his. If we humble ourselves, and if we pray, and if we seek his face, and if we turn from our wicked ways, knowing all the while that we still fall short, God will move from heaven to come to our aid.

Politics is Not the Answer

This verse gives me hope because we seem to be in a bad state today. I cannot remember a time when America was more divided than we are at this moment. As a nation, we have turned away from the Lord. How will we ever find our way back to God?

The answer won’t come from the White House.

Politics will not save us.

Putting another justice on the Supreme Court won’t heal our land.

The White House won’t save us

I say that in full recognition that it matters greatly how we vote because it matters who sits in the White House and makes those judicial appointments. We have to vote. I’m all for speaking out and taking a stand.

But when all is said and done, our greatest need is not political; our greatest need is spiritual. We need another great awakening in our land. Perhaps it will come in our day. I certainly hope so. Perhaps we will see another Layman’s Prayer Movement sweep our nation. I’m certainly encouraged by the thousands who have come to the various state capitals to pray with Franklin Graham. I’m very glad about the hundreds of thousands who came to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. for the “Together 2016” event. Later this year a number of ministries are planning different events to call the church to prayer. I urge you to get involved in praying with others for revival. Across the nation churches have come together to pray in response to the shootings that have taken place. This is all to the good.

Praying in the Last Days

Let me add one final thought. I believe we are living in the last days before the coming of the Lord. It certainly seems like the “terrible times” of 2 Timothy 3:1 have come true in our generation. I don’t have any secret information about the date of the Lord’s return. I’m simply giving my observation on the basis of what the Bible says about the last days.

What if Jesus is coming soon? What difference should that make to us? Can we still expect a move of God in the last days of human history? With all my heart, I believe the answer is yes. Take a quick look at Luke 18:1-8, which we call the Parable of the Persistent Widow. Most of us know the story about the judge who gave the widow what she wanted because she wore him out by coming back again and again. It’s an easy-to-grasp lesson on the importance of persistence when we pray. That much is obvious. But here’s the kicker. Jesus ends the story this way: “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). Where did that come from? This isn’t a parable about the second coming. It’s about prayer. But Jesus applies it to the situation on the earth when he returns.

Will Jesus find faith on the earth?

What’s up with that?

We need to read this against the larger New Testament teaching that in the last days there will be a huge turning away from the Lord. It is sometimes called the “apostasy” or the “falling away.” You can read about it in Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21 and 2 Thessalonians 2. As we rush headlong toward the return of Christ, we should expect to see exactly what is happening today:

False Christs.

Spiritual counterfeits.

Christians compromising their faith.

Pastors turning away from the truth.

Spiritual leaders who mislead the flock of God.

The Last Days will be awash in spiritual deception

As the foundations of society crumble beneath us, we will see this happening more and more. All these things are just the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8).

We ought to read Luke 18:9 in light of those passages. In a world where truth has become entirely subjective, where feelings trump biblical commands, where we reinterpret the Bible to justify our sin, Jesus’ poignant question takes on a deeper meaning:

When the Son of Man comes…

Will he find faith in your church?

Will he find faith in your family?

Will he find faith in your heart?

While going through my files, I found the notes from the final sermon I preached at the first church I pastored after seminary. On that parting Sunday I told the people, “I have some prayers I have prayed for a long time.” I listed a number of requests I had brought before the Lord. My notes say I had just talked with someone whose marriage was in trouble because of an enslaving habit. They were in despair and needed a place to live. No name is written down, and I can honestly say that 33 years later, I have no idea who I was praying for back then. But I added this…

Will we keep on praying?

“Not all my prayers have been answered… yet!!!”

As we journey along through life, there will always be some prayers that haven’t been answered yet. Will we give up or will we keep praying? That’s what Jesus means when he asks, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Will he find anyone still believing or will everyone turn away?

Will he find faithful believers who still pray as the world self-destructs?

We can make sure the answer is yes. We can do our part by praying persistently, unitedly, fervently, joyfully, and faithfully. I believe those end-time prayers will have great power with the Lord because they are offered in the face of persecution, ridicule, and rising unbelief.

God will not let those prayers go to waste.

Start by Looking in the Mirror

So where does revival begin? The answer is always the same. It begins with you and it begins with me. It’s one thing to talk about what stands between our nation and revival or between my church and revival. It’s always easier to confess someone else’s sins. Ask God what stands between you and a new experience of his power and blessing. If you ask in sincerity, God will surely answer.

The call of Christ is always personal

Do we have to stay the way we are? The answer is, “No, but.” We have to start by understanding “the way we are.” Once we see that, the possibility of genuine change and real spiritual growth is open to us. So I end where I began. Revival is not far away when we see ourselves as God sees us. It’s easy to say, “America needs to get right with God” or “My neighbor needs changing” or “My church needs revival.” Those statements can become excuses for evading our own responsibility.

The call of Christ is always personal. He calls us one by one to follow him. Perhaps we should repeat the Chinese prayer that goes this way: “O Lord, change the world. Begin, I pray thee, with me.” Revival begins with the person you see when you look in the mirror. Start there and by God’s grace revival will begin inside your own heart.

Learning to Pray like Abraham

Genesis 18:13-22

Ge 18:13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

· We see Abraham talking with God (seems he is negotiating with God)

· I simply believe he is in prayer with God. (prayer is talking to God)

· In these prayers, God is physically present for the conversation!

· These people were not Super Humans ! (like passions) James 5:17

Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months

· Several things stand out about Abraham’s praying.

I. Special Type of Prayer

A. He was praying for specific things. (He got to the point)

B. The prayers of George Muller (orphanage- boat & fog- 5 min.)

II. Compassionate Praying

A. Abrahams Heart reflected God’s Heart (few bad apples-city)

Ezek.18:33 2 Peter 3:9 Luke 6:35

1

III. Importunity Praying

A. God wasn’t impatient with Abraham praying

B. Abraham knew this was urgent !

Ps 69:17 And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

Ps 102:2 Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

C. Praying that will not be denied.

Lu 11:8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

IV. Reverence Praying

Ge 18:27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:

A. We need to be cautious when speaking to God !

B. We need to remember who that it is we are speaking to!

Lord, what do I know? I’m only dust and ashes. I’m not your counselor, and I’m not trying to tell you what to do. I’m telling you what I want because you invite me to bring my requests to you. Lord, you’re all-wise—what you ultimately decide to do with Sodom is your business—but if you’re asking me what I want, this is what I want.

God Is Communicating With Us All The Time

God is all around us, and eventually

If you open your mind you will see

The little things that show He is there

Whenever we need an answer to a prayer

Know that He will answer, if you wait

Have faith that He will communicate

Be open to His wisdom everywhere you glance

For nothing that happens in life is by chance

The answer may just drift into your mind

God has many helpers, who are always kind

You may hear a whisper into your ear

To let you know that God is always near

The answer may take you by surprise

God is communicating right before your eyes

The slightest little thing can happen at any time

But you have to be open to see the sign

He will always answer, it’s plain to see

For God loves us Unconditionally

                                                   Answered Prayer

1Jo 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: {in: or, concerning}

                                                     Godly Desires

Ps 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

How to delight in God                                                    Paul’s advice in Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.                                                                                                                             2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Delighting in God requires intentionally turning my heart away from instinctive, human responses—such as bitterness and hopelessness—and choosing to seek things from above.

in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.

I know God will soon answer my prayers. To let me leave this place, not much longer to wait, to hold your spirit again in Heaven will be my answered prayer.

                                         Lessons learned from Hannah’s Prayer

1 Samuel 1:9-11                                                                                                 3-19-25

1Sa 1:9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.

10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

4 The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded wit

                      strength.

5 They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry

ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed

                   feeble.

but joy cometh in the morning.

                                                                         Jabez  Prayer

1 Chronicles 4:9-10                                                                                                                    4-2-25

  • Are you satisfied with your Prayer life ?    (or life in general)

  • The Apostle Paul seemed like He wasn’t satisfied with His Spiritual progress.

Phil. 3:12-14- Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  • I have always felt I wanted to accomplish more for God and be more for God.

  • I think Jabez was this way

  • We don’t know a great deal about him, but there are some things we do know.

  1. JABEZ and His Personality      1 Chron. 4:9

  1. 3 things are said about Him in this verse-

-He was more honorable than his brethren (The word honorable has to do with people and actions that are honest, fair, and worthy of respect.)

                        B.  His mother named Him JABEZ- (The Son Of My Sorrow; Pain;

                                                                                           affliction; He Will Cause Pain.”)

-He did all He could not to live up to that name !

-You can make up your mind that you are going to be more than expected!

                                           (Mr. Allen-Simple Man)

                           C. He refused to be forced into anyone’s mold- (people’s environment)

II.        JABEZ Prayer                1 Chron. 4:10

  1. JABEZ prayed for Prosperity- vrs.10    (2-fold)

  1. He prays for the Lord’s fullest blessings upon his life !

  2. He then prays for his boundaries to be extended.                                                  (wasn’t satisfied with the status quo.)

  • He asked for God’s Best- He wanted God’s blessings on his life.

-you should pray for and about yourself.

-seeking things in your life that Glorifies God

  • Then He wants more to have more influence in the world

    1.

  1. JABEZ Prayed for  Power

1Ch 4:10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

  • He wanted more power in His life to be used of God

  • He did not want to be a weak Christian  (powerhouse for God)

Ac 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

  1. JABEZ Prayed for Protection

  • From sin and evil  (sin enters troubles follow)

  • He ask God to help him to live for Him.

Ps 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

             III.   JABEZ and His Protection

  1. God heard His prayer and granted His Petitions

  2. God did this because God honors prayer !

1Jo 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Conclusion- I am not Jabez but I am a child of God and I have desires to do more for God and be more than what I am now. God hears and answers prayers. You also can claim this prayer of Jabez.
